If ever there was a film that actively condoned and promoted mitching off school, it was Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Released in 1986, it became an instant smash hit thanks to Matthew Broderick's charm, John Hughes' superior writing / directing and the fact that it was damn hilarious. Here's what everyone's been up to...

MATTHEW BRODERICK – 'Ferris Bueller'

By the time Ferris Bueller's Day Off came around, Broderick was already an established teen actor, having starred in a number of highly-successful films such as WarGames and Biloxi Blues. Since then, he's starred in underrated comedy The Cable Guy with Jim Carrey, had a guest spot in 30 Rock and will soon appear in the new historical blockbuster Pompeii with Kit Harrington of Game of Thrones fame.

MIA SARA – 'Sloane Peterson'

Much like Broderick, Mia Sara was already known for her roles in Ridley Scott's weird-as-shit teenage fantasy drama Legend and was on her way to becoming a star with Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Since then, she's appeared in a number of straight-to-TV films and most recently turned up in a guest role on CSI: New York. She's also married to Brian Henson, eldest son of Muppets creator Jim Henson.

ALAN RUCK – 'Cameron Frye'

Alan Ruck was – wait for it – TWENTY-NINE when he starred in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. He was supposed to be playing a 17-year old. Crazy. Anyways, since that fateful day, Alan Ruck's turned up in a number of TV shows and films, all usually in supporting roles. He was one of the bus passengers in Speed, he was in actually-terrible Star Trek Generations, he's been in Scrubs, Psych, Burn Notice, Fringe and even Justified. He gets around for a dude that didn't want to get out of bed.

JENNIFER GREY – 'Jeanie Bueller'

Playing Ferris' constantly-angry sister, this would be Jennifer Grey's OTHER well-known role from the 1980's. The other was, as we know, Dirty Dancing. And maybe Red Dawn. Anyways, since then she's been in Friends as Mindy – Rachel's old friend who ends up marrying Dr. Barry, the man that Rachel almost married at the star of the series – and was a guest judge on Strictly Come Dancing.

CHARLIE SHEEN – 'Garth'

"Drugs?" Oh Charlie. If only you knew.

JEFFREY JONES – 'Edward R. Rooney'

Yikes. Although he's known for his role in this and as Emperor Joseph II in Amadeus and as the principal in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, he will be ultimately remembered for being a sex offender. He was charged in 2002 with possession of child pornography and pled no contest. He's now been placed on the Sex Offender's List for life and hasn't worked since 2007.
