The Empire Award Winners for 2009 were announced last night and were a slightly more crowd pleasing affair than the Oscars, as always. The Dark Knight won big, taking home Best Film, Best Director for Chris Nolan and Best Actor for Christian Bale; while, elsewhere, Quantum of Solace took home Best Thriller, with Gemma Arterton taking home the Best Newcomer award for her three minutes in the film - colonial nepotism is obviously rampant. Empire Readers voted for the awards, so we have them to blame for voting the likes of RocknRolla over In Bruges, and Helena Bonham-Carter inexplicably taking home the Best Actress gong for Sweeney Todd.
