Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth helmer Guillermo del Toro is looking for Tom Cruise to star in his latest flick, At The Mountains Of Madness.

According to Collider.com, Cruise is the director's top choice to headline the HP Lovecraft adaptation that studio Universal are heavily funding. But the executives are thought to favour a cheaper, younger alternative in James McAvoy. The film would be about an expedition to The South Pole in the 1930s that discovers to the true, dark roots of mankind. Cruise or McAvoy would play the leader of the expedition.

Cruise is currently gearing up to star in a fourth Mission Impossible movie, while McAvoy is starring in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class, opposite Michael Fassbender. The flick will shoot in May of next year.
