There is a chance that the penultimate episode in the Harry Potter saga, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, could have the highest opening weekend of all time.

Early tracking has shown pre-booking sales of over $30 million, with studio Warner Bros. expecting a three day weekend haul of, at least, $130 million, but possibly higher than $150 million. The current record holder is (the billion dollar grossing) The Dark Knight at $158 million. The previous best three day Potter haul is The Goblet of Fire, with $102 million.

It's two and half hours long, which will limit screenings; but matinees should be as strong as the evening shows given how broad the audience is. Still can't see it topping The Dark Knight, though.
