Avatar's seven week reign atop the American box-office came to a halt this passing weekend, as the Channing Tatum/Amanda Seyfried romantic drama, Dear John coined an impressive $32.4 million to Avatar's $23.6 million.
James Cameron's science fiction epic has a worldwide gross so far of $2.24 billion, and his still going strong overseas where, once again, it was the number one film.
Dear John is based on a novel by Nicolas Sparks, as mini-major Screen Gems took advantage of the Super Bowl weekend by aiming their film towards young women. Elsewhere the John Travolta/Jonathon Rhys Myers action film, From Paris With Love, bombed, taking a mediocre $8.1 million.
