If there are two films that have been genuine events the past year, they've been Star Wars and Deadpool. The former crossing $2 billion at the global box office, the latter continuing to pull in audiences.

Today, Deadpool is expected to cross $500 million after about 10 days of release. That is an insane number for a couple of reasons. 1. It has a budget of $58 million - less than a quarter of The Avengers and 2. It's one of the most foul-mouthed, filthiest flicks we've seen in a long time. 'R' rated films have long been thought to gross less, but Ryan Reynolds, the creative team behind Deadpool and the Fox marketing department went and flipped those notions firmly upside down.

We can now expect studios to scramble for similar properties, while Reynolds will find himself very much in demand since that opening. This was a movie built around and by him as a leading man - he deserves every success.

The number 1 spot is held by Jesus and Mel Gibson. The Passion of the Christ coined $611 million. But 'Pool should easily pass that.

So as we know a Deadpool sequel is in the works, with rumours that Fox want it to fill the held release spot for a previously proposed Fantastic Four sequel - which went about as poorly as Deadpool did well. That would mean Deadpool 2 in summer of next year. Still too long.
