Tom Cruise’s next film could be the thriller Edwin A. Salt, after helmer Philip Noyce (The Bone Collector, Catch A Fire) took over from bolted director Peter Berg. According to the trades the drama casts Cruise as a CIA officer who's accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy. Naturally much chasing and sweaty brow stuff ensues. Noyce is familiar with political intrigue shenanigans having taken charge of a couple of the Jack Ryan franchise (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger) to solid box office effect. Cruise is still on something of a downward popularity spiral and needs to a solid film to remind the public he’s a superstar. Also, he needs to stop acting like a crazy person.
