George Clooney assassin flick, The American, topped a slow American box-office this passing weekend with just under $13 million.

The moody looking film has grossed $16 million since its Wednesday bow, and out drew other new entry, the Robert Rodriguez directed Machete, which coined an estimated $11.3 million. It’s a long Labour Day weekend in America, so Monday will be considered another weekend day and the grosses should reflect that when the four day totals are released.

The American is another non commercial choice for Clooney, so funding studio Focus Features will be happy for it to turn a small profit - which it looks be on the way to.
