George Clooney will replace Robert Downey Jr. in the Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men) directed science fiction thriller Gravity, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sandra Bullock will play a lead role vacated by Scarlett Johansson, portraying an astronaut trapped in space and trying desperately to get home to her child. Clooney has a smaller part as the captain of the space station Bullock is working on - which proceeds to get destroyed by debris.

The actor/director will first film his third film as helmer, political flick, The Ides of March, before filming his role on the spring.
