Prolific character actor Harry Dean Stanton has passed away at the age of 91.

Stanton, who began his career at the age of 28, had been working steadily since in film and television since the '50s, and most recently turned up in David Lynch's revival of Twin Peaks.

Over the years, Stanton worked with some of the most recognisable directors of our time - from Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, and John Carpenter to Wim Wenders, John Hughes and, of course, David Lynch.

In a short statement released to press, Lynch expressed his thoughts on Stanton in his own unique way. "There went a great one. There’s nobody like Harry Dean. Everyone loved him. And with good reason. He was a great actor (actually beyond great) – and a great human being – so great to be around him!!! You are really going to be missed Harry Dean!!! Loads of love to you wherever you are now!!!”
