Brie Larson's 'Captain Marvel' is proving to be a huge success around the world, despite all of the online backlash in recent weeks.

Figures coming through this morning are that 'Captain Marvel' is the highest-grossing movie of 2019 (so far). Not only that, but the $455 million (€404 million) in sales over three days made it the sixth-best opening weekend for a movie worldwide.

Oh, and it was also the biggest opening weekend for a female-led movie ever. That is International women's weekend in full effect, right there. The movie made $153 (€136) million in North America, while overseas a whopping $302 (€268) million.

This means that 'Captain Marvel' is crushing the competition that came before it. 'Alita: Battle Angel' and 'How to Train Your Dragon' although both quite successful, haven't managed to earn as much over their entire cinema run; both are set to generate over $400 million worldwide.

Before being released last weekend, 'Captain Marvel' had been shrouded in unfortunate controversy. The user-generated reviews of the movie on IMDb was hit by trolls awarding 'Captain Marvel' a heap of one-star reviews. The result was the movie sitting on an average rating of 5.4/10 (currently it sits at a more acceptable 7/10). It just goes to show that bullies never win, and if they do, superheroes can kick their arse.

We awarded the movie a quality four-star review, saying the movie "gives everything a fan girl or boy could want – spectacle, action, heart, and inspiration." It also has a killer 90's soundtrack.

With 'Captain Marvel' becoming 2019's highest-grossing movie so far this year, we wonder what will be the next movie to take over the mantle... Oh, right, 'Endgame'.

'Avengers: Endgame' will arrive in Ireland a day earlier than everywhere else, on April 25th.
