Disney once again proved that nobody does kiddie fare like they do, as Beverly Hills Chinchilla topped the American box office with a stellar $29 million bow, giving it the top spot. Other nearest opener was Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist (which has gotten strong reviews from American scribes) debuting in third with $12 million. After that it was the Ed Harris directed Western Appaloosa, which grossed an estimated $5 million from just over a thousand screens, and An American Carol, an assault on Michael Moore by Scary Movie sequel director David Zucker, which bowed to a crap $3.8 million. The most impressive opening of the weekend belonged to political satirist Bill Maher, whose documentary Religulous cracked the top ten with $3.5 million, despite showing on a paltry 500 screens. Simon Pegg meanwhile, had another domestic failure on his hands as comedy, How To Lose Friends And Alienate People tanked, coining just $1.4 million, barely making it into the top 20.
