At times like these, family movies provide great comfort, as well as entertainment. And there were some brilliant offerings for the whole clann during the 2010s.

You can check out our previous picks from the '80s, '90s and '00s.

We've picked a selection of recent live-action as well as animated movies for you to enjoy from home.

We're even sussed out exactly where you can find them on demand.

Paddington 2

If you’re in the mood for something wholesome, look no further than 'Paddington 2'. The sequel about the marmalade-loving bear is not only one of the best movies of 2017, it's also one of the most feel-good family movies of the decade. It’s perfect for families, grown-ups and kids because, even if it is a bit corny and predictable, there’s never a dull moment, and there’s a purity and innocence to the film that is simply irresistible.

Song of the Sea

Cartoon Saloon have produced some gorgeous animated features including 'Secret of Kells' and 'The Breadwinner' (which is on Netflix). 'Song of the Sea' is widely regarded as their best yet. The animation is absolutely gorgeous and the story is really very emotional. A father in mourning for his wife who disappeared without a trace, struggles to raise his young son and daughter. Thus their grandmother take them to the city, but a mysterious force calls to her granddaughter.

How to Train Your Dragon

The first of the 'How to Train Your Dragon' movies is still its best. Featuring an impressive cast that includes Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill and Kristen Wiig, it follows a young Viking named Hiccup who's a disappointment to his father, chieftain of the village of Berk, as he has no desire to kill dragons. Hiccup tries to change his ways but upon befriending an injured dragon in the woods, decides it's time to change the mind of his father and village instead.

Moana

Moana is more interested in exploring beyond the reef than preparing to take over from her father as chief of her tribe. But when famine threatens the island, the adventurous Polynesian princess sets out to save her people. She's tasked with finding the shape-shifting demi-god Maui to return a heart stone to the goddess and mother of islands Te Fiti. With stunning animation, a brilliant soundtrack and plenty of humour and heart, 'Moana' is a highly entertaining watch.

Having explored the feelings of toys, cars, monsters and bugs, Pixar now explores the feelings of, well, feelings. Joy is one of five emotions controlling eleven-year-old Riley, living inside her head alongside Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust. Toy Story 3

Woody, Buzz and the other toys accidentally end up in a daycare centre when their owner Andy grows up. At first this seems like the perfect new home for them. But when they realise the dangers lurking under the surface, they begin to formulate an escape plan. 'Toy Story 4' worked nicely as an add-on but the emotional climax of the 'Toy Story' franchise was really in the this third chapter.

12-year-old Miguel Rivera wants to become a musician like his hero, Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt), but his dreams are stifled his grandmother, who is determined to conserve the ban on music started in the family generations ago. When he rebels against the ban, Miguel is transported to the colourful and vibrant world of the Land of the Dead. There, he will uncover a secret that haunts his family’s past. Despicable Me

This one may look like it's just for the kids, but 'Despicable Me' is a great watch and one of the best contemporary, non-Disney family movies. It follows a criminal mastermind who hopes to become the world's greatest villain by stealing the moon. To do this, he needs a shrinking ray owned by a rival evil genius. He adopts three orphan girls to help him steal it. Of course, they manage to bring out the long-buried caring side of the villain. Lovely altogether, though it is also the movie that introduced the world to those annoying minions...

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' was probably the most surprising animated film of the 2010s. The animation was gorgeous and vibrant, voice cast the perfect fit, and soundtrack urban and electrifying. While Daniel Pemberton composed the original score, songs that featured on the soundtrack included "Sunflower" by Post Malone, "Elevate" by DJ Khalil and "Home" by Vince Staples. And who can forget the song from the movie's best scene, "What's Up Danger"?

The Lego Movie

Not only is 'The Lego Movie' smart, hilarious, colourful and vibrant with catchy music (‘Everything is awesooooooome!’) and great characters, it’s a film you can enjoy with family, friends, or anyone really. It follows a construction worker named Emmett whose life follows a stringent routine until he is told that he is ‘the Special’, destined to take down the evil Lord Business and save the world. Its stellar cast includes Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, and Will Arnett.
