Most 90s kids (unless you were a big chicken – buck buck!) loved Nickelodeon series Are You Afraid of the Dark? and for some it was their first taste of horror.

The anthology series revolved around a group of teenagers (who called themselves “The Midnight Society”) who would sit around a camp fire in the middle of the woods telling scary stories. Said story was then depicted on the screen, forming the rest of the episode.

The show ran from 1990 to 1996 and as well as featuring some pretty famous faces over the years – including Ryan Gosling, Melissa Joan Hart, Elisha Cuthbert and Jay Baruchel – the series also had a few controversial episodes which were so frightening that they were actually banned from TV (makes you want to watch it even more, amirite?).

Here's a refresher of that spoooky opening:

It has now emerged that Paramount has hired Gary Dauberman, the writer behind several horror movies including It and Annabelle: Creation, to write the script and produce a film version of the show. Dauberman is also lined up to write It: Chapter 2 and The Nun, which is part of The Conjuring universe.

No other details on the project have emerged, so no telling if this will be full-blown horror or have a fun 90s vibe to it, but fans seem to be pretty on board with it:
