Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, which were first published in 1975 with Interview with a Vampire, have been picked up by Universal Pictures with the chaps behind Transformers and Star Trek set to produce.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will tackle the initial production that the studio hope will become a franchise - being that there are a heap of books to work from.

Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt starred in Neil Jordan's Interview with a Vampire in 1994, which did strong global business at the box office. However, it was followed up around a decade later by Queen of the Damned, starring our own Stuart Townsend, which bombed and ensured that no other book would be adapted. Well, for a while at least.

Rice just penned her new addition to the series, Prince Lestat, which has obviously perked Hollywood's ears.

Given the success of vampire themed shows and movies at the moment, we'd expect this one to move relatively fast once a script and director are sorted.
