Lethal Weapon has always had a special place in people's hearts, as it was effectively the blueprint for all buddy-cop movies that followed and launched Mel Gibson into super stardom in the process.

While the fourth one seemed like it was more or less the end of it all, there's been countless rumours floating through the internet that a fifth one was on the way, notwithstanding It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's parodies and the TV series that is somehow still going even though nobody appears to be watching it.

However, in a recent interview with Spocklight Podcast, Richard Donner spoke about the possibility of a fifth Lethal Weapon and said that it's "inches away from getting the go-ahead." As Donner tells it, "(if) everybody steps up and we all get together, we'll make it. Mel and Danny are on board. If they don't... if it doesn't work out, at least we tried. But there's a good... a better chance that you will see the movie."

Gibson and Glover reunited just recently at an AMPAS event which, funnily enough, was honouring Richard Donner's legacy and career - and the chemistry between them was just as palpable as ever.  Not only that, Deadline reported on the same story back in October and said that Warner Bros. was exploring the possibility.

Given how Gibson seems to have rehabilitated his image - at least enough that a major studio is happy to place him in a feel-good family comedy with three other well-known actors - there's every chance that Donner's telling the truth and this could happen.

The question is, does anyone want to see a fifth Lethal Weapon that doesn't feature Mac and Dennis? Sound off in the comments below.
