Inspirations for characters or ships in Star Wars are pretty well-documented.
For example, Han Solo's ship - the Millennium Falcon - was inspired by a burger and a pickle in front of George Lucas. More recently, the porgs of Ahch-To were inspired by the puffins on Skellig Michael. Darth Vader's helmet was inspired by a mixture of samurai and Nazi helmets, whilst the X-Wing was inspired in part by the F-14 Tomcat.
Even though The Last Jedi isn't even out yet, fans are picking over stills and images from the trailer to find details - and one fansite picked up on a small creature that looked suspiciously like Gary, Carrie Fisher's French bulldog - which Rian Johnson happily confirmed as accurate.

Gary was a pretty regular feature on the set of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, so it should come as no surprise that designers used him as an inspiration. So the question now is which creature is going to get more plushy toys - the porgs or this dog thing?
Our money's on porgs.
