After well over a year of blind speculation, Casey Affleck has come clean. Not about the sex pest claims, no, about the nature of the documentary - or should that be mockumentary *wildly elbows air* - he made about his brother-in-law, Joaquin Phoenix.

Two weeks before its release (October 1st), Casey admitted the following to the New York Times: "It's a terrific performance; it's the performance of his career. I never intended to trick anybody (naaah). The idea of a 'hoax' never entered my mind (suuuure)... There were multiple takes, these are performances. We wanted to create a space. You believe what's happening is real." Probably because everyone in the production camp was adamant it was real. I'd wager the only thing stopping Affleck from continuing with the whole "Is he, or isn't he BATS" line of PR is that he couldn't be perceived to be that feckless a brother-in-law. Imagine the conversations with Summer: "Hey honey, you don't mind if the public think that your husband took advantage of your brother while he's in the midst of a fake 'breakdown', do you? You do? Irresponsible you say. OK. Hey darling, you don't mind if the public think that I had it away with one of the female production assistants while filming this documentary I did about your allegedly mental brother..." And so on.

The New York Post continues: "He also acknowledged that Phoenix's infamous interview on The Late Show with David Letterman last year was all part of the act, although he insisted that Letterman himself was not in on the secret. Phoenix is to appear on the chatshow again next week, and Affleck revealed that his long-time friend would not be appearing in character this time."

Good news, @Rachel, this probably means Joaquin enjoys regular showers! Sniff at will.
