Not to be outshone by Beyonce's growing love bump, GaGa turned up to last night's MTV VMAs in understated drag. You've got a lot to learn about thunder pilfering, Nicki Minaj... while we're at it, can someone just ensure Jonah Hill bends a leg in all future photos, he looks like a wonky tripod.

GaGa took to the stage to open the awards at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre, performing her hit single You and I in character as her alter-ego Jo Calderone (who you might recall from her latest video). The pop star stepped out on to the dark, empty stage wearing a loose black suit and T-shirt with slicked-back dark hair with a lit cigarette. As Calderone, Gaga started into an emotional monologue about his tortured relationship with the pop star, saying: "Lady Gaga, she left me. She said it always starts out good but she said I'm just like the last one."

As the performance was coming to an end Queen guitarist Brian May joined her on stage with a guitar solo while Gaga climbed on top of the piano and sprayed (hopefully) beer on the crowd. Katy Perry was accompanied on stage by Kanye West for best collaboration for E.T. and later earned the top prize video of the year with her triumphant song and video for Firework. Her tally for the night was three Moon Men, having also collected a minor trophy for special effects with E.T.

Adele, whose performance was one of the highlights of the evening, was shut out of the top awards but picked up three awards in the more minor categories of art direction, cinematography, and editing... whoopdidoo. She was edited well. Other awards went to Justin Bieber for best "male" (he's looking more like an attractive lesbian every day) video with U Smile.

Below is a list of winners. But before you busy yourselves with them, why not have a hawk at the gallery, where you can see Russell Brand's tan, Katy Perry's box, Kim Kardashian's raison d'etre, and the likes of Selena Gomez, Mily Cyrus, Katie Holmes, Britney Spears, Adele, and Jessie J all wearing clothes. You can also survey Chris Brown's ascension up his own anus.
