2009 was the year Jersey Shore was released onto the world and made household names of Mike 'The Situation' Sorrentino, Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi and Pauly D.
However, as these things go, the show was cancelled after three seasons and they're all off doing different things. Snooki, for example, is a New York Times bestselling author and we're not even close to joking about that.
Mike The Situation, however, is looking down the barrel at well over thirty years in jail if convicted. According to a report filed by Variety, Mike Sorrentino and his brother, Marc, have been charged and indicted with tax evasion and falsifying records. The Situation parlayed his brief, fleeting moment of fame into a number of business ventures, including a clothing line called Situation Nation - which sounds like the bigger crime here, if we're being honest.
The indictment filed by the US Justice Department's Tax Division alleges that the Sorrentino brothers "conspired to defraud the United States by not paying all federal income tax owned on approximately $8.9 million that Michael earned between 2010 and 2012."
"The brothers allegedly filed or caused to be filed with the IRS false tax returns that understated gross receipts, claimed fraudulent business deductions, and disguised income payments made to the brothers and to others and the underreported net business income."
If the judge imposes the maximum statutory jail time on all the charges, The Situation is facing five years for the conspiracy count, and three years for each count of aiding in the preparation of false tax returns and a maximum sentence of 10 years for each structuring count and five for the tax evasion count.
You might say he's... in a bit of situation.
