After all the drama of last night’s ‘Love Island’, including the reunion of everyone’s favourite loved-up couple, Jack and Dani, it makes sense that the show is inspiring people to look at their own love life.
Among those who have been considering what love has provided them in the past and present is the presenter of ‘Love Island’, Caroline Flack.
In keeping with the reality series’ theme, she wrote three open letters to the men she has loved, lost and found, in Cosmopolitan this week.
In a letter to her best friend, she considered how easy life was with him, how much they had in common, and how everyone thought that they should be more than friends (“even our parents thought we were a good match”).
While she allowed that “if we had had those feelings for one another, we would have been perfect together”, she concludes “that you can’t force feelings” and that that’s “the problem with love.”
Next writing to the “men of her thirties”, or the men she “lost”, Caroline considers how she had “fun” dating friends, younger men and “men who were hopelessly inappropriate.” She considered how dating in your thirties is different as “you’ve survived heartbreak, you’ve survived long, messy relationships, you’ve survived unrequited love and maddening love that leaves you tired and confused and willing to give it all up.”
She even recalled an occasion where after breaking up, she saw the new woman her ex was with and “felt only happiness for them.”
Last but not least, she writes to fiancé Andrew Brady (they announced their engagement last April after dating for 3 months).
She wrote about how they met after following one another on Instagram, continuing: “People talk about meeting someone and feeling as though you’ve known them your whole life. That’s what it felt like when I met you.
“We laugh until we cry. I’ve never had that before – with anyone. Every other relationship I’ve had has only been about love, but with you it’s about friendship, too. It’s what I’ve been looking for. My life was complete before you came into it – a man doesn’t complete your life. But I wanted to make room in it for you.”
