At this point it feels like superhero movies have starred just about every actor working in Hollywood – even prestigious actors and directors like Kenneth Branagh, Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Kevin Costner, Michael Keaton, Tommy Lee Jones, Mickey Rourke, and Jamie Foxx have tried their hand at the genre.
Of course there are some actors who have vowed to never star in, or direct, a superhero movie, such as Mel Gibson, Reese Witherspoon, Sean Penn, Emma Thompson, Jason Statham and Clint Eastwood. Now Jodie Foster can be added to the names.
The Silence of the Lambs actress and now director recently helmed the 'Arkangel' episode of the fourth season of Black Mirror, and in an interview with Radio Times Magazine (via The Daily Mail), she slammed the Marvel and DC output of superhero movies as she compared them to fracking.
“Going to the movies has become like a theme park,” she said. “Studios making bad content in order to appeal to the masses and shareholders is like fracking - you get the best return right now but you wreck the earth.”
She added: “It’s ruining the viewing habits of the American population and then ultimately the rest of the world.”
She insists that as a director, she was never interested in “$200m movies about superheroes” and that CGI and that sort of “spectacle” is not the reason why she makes movies. She states: “I feel like I make movies because there are things I have to say in order to figure out who I am or my place in the world, or for me to evolve as a person.”
At the same time, Foster did allow that she would consider a superhero protagonist if they had “really complex psychology.”
