You may have thought that coming out as gay in such a public manner was no issue for someone like Ellen DeGeneres back in the 1990s, but the chat show host has revealed that this wasn't the case.
In fact, she said that the reaction of some of her friends and other gay famous people were hurtful after the famous 'Coming Out' episode of 'Ellen' aired in 1997.
Ellen was speaking to Dax Shepard on his 'Armchair Expert' podcast and said that she felt that she did not have the support of the gay community in the way that she expected, and pinpointed Elton John as a particular culprit.
"‘Even Elton John said, “Shut up already. We know you’re gay. Be funny”," she said. "I had never met him and I thought, “What kind of support is that from a gay person?” But everybody assumed I was just non-stop talking about. It hurt my feelings.’"
She added that when the show was cancelled not long after the 'Coming Out' episode, she felt isolated.
"No one would touch me. I had no agent, I had no possibility of a job, I had nothing,’ she said. ‘The gay community, it’s a really difficult line to walk. Some people thought, “You’re not gay enough, and you’re not doing enough for our community, and there are so many that have done more.” And I was like, “I didn’t say I was your leader, and I didn’t say I have done more. I just want to be a comedian, and I just happen to be gay”.’
Elton John has previously appeared on The Ellen Show, so we're assuming that they have made amends since then.
