You might remember this little incident from March 2nd...
Things to avoid in the run up to Paris fashion week, not to mention the Oscars (especially when the person in the running for Best Actress happens to be the face of Dior, and a very prominent Jew who was born in Israel): engaging in anti-Semitic slurs while pissed in a Parisian cafe.
John Galliano thought he was above all that. He's obviously been too busy being a raging pr*ck around Paris to survey the career trajectory of one Mel Gibson.
It all kicked off last week, when the British designer, who's designed for Christian Dior for over fifteen years, got himself rat-arsed to the point of declaring his love for Hitler and informing a couple (a Jewish woman and her Asian boyfriend) that "people like you would be dead today". Oh, and that their forefathers should've been "f***ing gassed". By the by, when asked where he was from, he replied something to the tune of "your a*sehole," which is fitting. They have that bleeped out in the video.
So, last Friday, Dior suspended him pending investigation, but it would appear Natalie Portman's dress choice is more powerful than the law, for she chose not to wear Dior to the Oscars.
Portman, who of course went on to win the Oscar for Best Actress, issued this statement: "I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano's comments that surfaced today. In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way. I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful."
It's not certain if Natalie will continue to be the face of the label. If not, they might consider recruiting the static visage of one Nicole Kidman, who had no such issues hauling Dior around on Sunday Night.
As ever, Galliano will continue to have his staunch supporters, what with one Antigone Schilling, who writes about fashion for the website slate.fr, saying: "He was drunk, he was probably drugged, and the people (in the video) were playing with him (to the point of him choosing to bring Hitler into the conversation). He would never have said that under normal circumstances, and we must remember that. We must also remember what he has brought to Dior over 15 years with the house." Yep. Dresses. Big wup.
Antigone might want reminding that he also (reportedly) said "Dirty Jewish face, you should be dead" and "F***ing Asian bastard, I will kill you". He also (allegedly) repeatedly referred to the woman "ugly" and a "slag", before attempting to slap the heads off them on his way out of the joint. Blaming booze for exposing one's blatantly ingrained bigoted nature is beyond pathetic, but hey, throw me some pretty gunas and I'll overlook all that.
Numpty.
