The name is something of a joke - World Party is just one man, the ex-Waterboy Karl Wallinger who seems to have a bit of a permanent identity crisis. The maverick Welshman has an extraordinary ability to produce perfect imitations of old pop legends and on his new album he manages to sound like John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Neil Young in turn. Inevitably this makes Wallinger himself look rather characterless; still these gentle hippy-influenced songs are a lot better than anything Noel Gallagher has written recently and for the pop connoisseur this is a highly entertaining album.
