We knew it was coming, but it's sad news, nonetheless.

As the below tweet will illustrate, Windmill Lane - the Dublin studio complex where U2 fully or partially recorded albums such as 'Boy', 'The Joshua Tree' and 'War' - has been demolished.

Although the studio had been dormant as a recording facility for two decades - the company Windmill Lane has since moved to several other sites around Dublin city - the building has remained a Mecca of-sorts for U2 fans from around the world, who would add their names and messages to the colourful graffiti on the studio's walls.

Other bands and acts who recorded in the studio - which originally opened in 1978 - included Sinead O'Connor, Clannad, The Waterboys, Van Morrison, Elvis Costello and even Kate Bush. The soundtracks to films such as Room With a View, My Left Foot, The Remains of the Day and more were also partially or fully recorded there.
