Laura Jane Grace, the lead singer of American punk band Against Me!, has long been a proponent of LGBT rights since she transitioned in 2012.
With Against Me! playing North Carolina at the weekend - the state that introduced the controversial 'bathroom law', which is seen as discriminatory to transgender people - she decided to make a powerful statement on stage by burning her birth certificate.
Footage shot by an audience member shows Grace smiling as she burns the document and saying 'Bye, gender!'.

Many bands and artists have cancelled their gigs in North Carolina since the law was brought in, including Bruce Springsteen, Ringo Starr and Pearl Jam.
