The Cocteau Twins always stood out from the crowd, even in the early days when they were essentially a gothic rock band with a seriously strange singer. The ethereal, psychotic voice of Liz Fraser lent an eerie quality to the band's fragmentary songs, which were energised by pulsating basslines and stark drumbeats. As the Scottish trio grew in confidence they moved into richer textures, creating lush, baroque soundscapes that were often imitated but never equalled. This well-chosen compilation contains the key moments from six albums and seven EPs; it all adds up to a beautifully lazy, sensuous experience that's perfect for grey winter evenings.
