Sadly still largely unknown outside their native Birmingham, Pram are one of British pop's most engaging oddities. Their new album starts with a jazzy, melodic mix of flutes and keyboards, topped off by Rosie Cuckston's little-girl vocals. After this fine beginning, every track adds something new to the mix, from old-style brass to toy pianos. The songwriting is frustratingly inconsistent but even in their most self-indulgent moments Pram have more than enough charm to carry them through. This is folk music for the 21st century and well worth checking out.
