They say you should never change a winning formula but obviously no-one's told Papa Roach. Against all the odds the Californian brat-poppers have dramatically ditched their nu-metal rapping, introduced a much more conventional hard-rock sound in its place. One thing that's still intact is the band's trademark self-pity, bolstered as ever by singer Jacoby Shaddix's gut-wrenchingly intense lyrics. Lovehatettagedy is a lean, focused record full of variations on the adolescent theme of 'Life's not fair' that should appeal to petulant teenagers everywhere. True, it could have done with a few more memorable melodies and it clearly runs out of steam before the end. But at least they mean it, man
