The big-beat artists Tricky and Massive Attack may have put Bristol on the music map but Movietone remain one of the city's best-kept secrets. That's a shame because, as this album confirms, their quintessentially English brand of jazz-folk is just as accomplished as their more famous compatriots. Mixing hazy Nick Drake-style pastoralism with a psychedelic lyricism, these nine songs are underpinned by some beautifully delicate piano playing and Kate Wright's sensuous, late-night vocals. At times it's a little too understated for its own good but for the most part Movietone
are a hypnotic delight.
