Madonna's music tends to provoke strong reactions and this record should be no exception - for the simple reason that in terms of quality it's all over the place. There's some brilliant futuristic dance music here, which is set to fill the disco floors for the rest of the year. The sheer relentlessness of many of the tracks is breathtaking. But their impact is seriously spoiled by some trite lyrics and a general air of heartlessness. And her cover of American Pie still sounds like a terrible mistake. Music is in many ways an impressive album but it does leave you wondering whether Madonna actually stands for or believes in anything any more.
