Not a lot of people know that this London indie-dance outfit were the biggest-selling British band in the US just a couple of years ago, selling nearly half a million copies of their debut album How to Operate With a Blown Mind. Unfortunately, even this triumph wasn't quite enough to prevent their temperamental frontman Dave Randall from walking out and leaving the others with a rather tricky decision to make. For this all-important follow-up, then, singing duties have passed on to no fewer than three other band members as well as a host of guest vocalists including Bootsy Collins and Greg Dulli. And therein lies the problem: the sheer number of competing voices means that the band can't help coming across as rather half-formed and characterless. The Allstars formula of big beats and judiciously chosen samples is still in perfect working order, creating an exciting, multi-layered sound that's tailor made for the more adventurous dancefloors out there in clubland. But the bottom line is that if they're to keep their career on track, they need a new leader - and soon.
