Jewel is the very model of a rags to riches story, a humble busker from Alaska who went on to sell 10m copies of her debut album Pieces of You. Sadly her response to declining sales has been to strip the music of almost everything that made it interesting in the first place, beefing up her sound in a blatant attempt to appeal to the Sheryl Crow market. This Way is a desperately disappointing effort from an artist who once showed such promise, full of empty rock gestures and trite lyrical observations that even her most loyal fans are likely to find rather patronising. Occasionally - just occasionally - Jewel has the sense to strip the sound right down and allow her fragile cut-glass voice to stand on its own merits. For the most part, however, This Way finds her floundering in a sea of raunchy cliches and New Age platitudes; a career re-think is surely in order.
