Whatever else can be said about Mancunian band James, their sheer staying power is little short of amazing. Over a decade since Sit Down became a huge dancefloor hit, Tim Booth and co are still producing elaborate, finely-wrought albums of earnest indie-pop. Pleased To Meet You was produced by Brian Eno and mostly recorded live in studio but it doesn't seem to have made much difference to the staple James sound - the songs still tend towards the epic, full of grand lyrical statements on subjects such as the limits of faith and science. Noble, worthy and generally fine - but a lack of memorable tunes means that the album can't really be called one of their best.
