He's nearing 60, but Prince still shows no signs of losing his creative edge or his ability to write an incredible song. Prince turned 56 on June 7th and so to honour his Grand Purpleness, we've dug up his five best songs.
5. I WOULD DIE 4 U
Taken from his seminal album, Purple Rain, I Would Die 4 U is every bit the power-pop anthem you'd expect from Prince. Written at arguably the height of his creative powers, it encapsulates everything about Prince's on-screen character and propensity for explicit lyrics.
4. CONTROVERSY
Taken from the album of the same name, this little-known track from 1981 hits all the right notes - funky, danceable and even has a controversial title.
3. GETT OFF
This track is pure filth. Twenty-two positions in a one-night stand? Prince, you dog.
2. I WANNA BE YOUR LOVER
Taken from his second album, I Wanna Be Your Lover became a crowd favourite and is still in his live set. Dimitri From Paris did a very good remix of this which you can listen to right here.
1. RASPBERRY BERET / PURPLE RAIN
You'd be hard-pressed not to play this in any social environment and find someone who didn't know the lyrics to either song.
