Back in 1984 Frankie Goes To Hollywood were arguably the most popular band in Britain - but even then they always felt like a novelty act. A bunch of Liverpool scallies with two openly homosexual vocalists, their rock-disco records were both powerfully energetic and ridiculously over the top. The one everyone remembers is their debut single 'Relax', a paean to the joys of gay sex which was banned by the BBC and went on to spend more time in the UK charts than any other single before or since. This compilation has all the hits and although the synth-pop production inevitably sounds dated, FGTH were genuine pop radicals who deserve to be remembered.
