Bill Wells is a self-taught, free-spirited jazz player who is best known for his collaborations with various luminaries of the Glasgow music scene. His own compositions are best described as structured chaos, using lo-fi trumpets, old pianos and lonely harmonica to create decadent, film-noir instrumentals. You can see why the Scottish Jazz Community shun him - he's too undisciplined by half - but at his best you can also see why bands like the Gentle Waves are so anxious to work with him. Though all too brief - at just six tracks - this new collection's elegiac, stately mood still makes it a record to treasure.
