Tribute albums have a terrible reputation and deservedly so - they rarely amount to anything more than a collection of mediocre bands doing bad impressions of their heroes. This, however, is something else completely: a re-recording of Bruce Springsteen's stripped-down album Nebraska (which he recorded in a few hours back in 1982 and has since become recognised as one of his very best works). A host of performers from America's roots-rock scene appear here. Highlights include Chrissie Hynde's take on the title track and Johnny Cash performing 'I'm On Fire'. Against the odds, the concept works, mainly because of the sheer quality of the songs which for the most part are old folk stories compellingly retold. A treasure of an album - but make sure you hear the original first.
