Ahead of a planned concert in Los Angeles, Red Hot Chili Peppers' Anthony Kiedis was rushed to hospital.

The 53-year old complained of extreme stomach pain and was rushed to hospital by ambulance, just a few hours before he and the band were due to take to the stage for KROQ's annual Weenie Roast in Irvine, California.

Flea took to the stage and apologised to fans, saying that they were "devastated" and that "unfortunately there’s a medical thing that happened and he (Kiedis) needed to deal with it."

KROQ published a short statement, apologising for the cancellation and cited Kiedis' medical condition as the cause. Chad Smith, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' drummer, later posted a message on his Twitter account, saying that "NO one's more disappointed than us that we couldn't perform tonight. Sending love and a speedy recovery to my brother Anthony."

As of writing, there's been no update on Kiedis' condition. The singer has been frank about his drug addiction, having suffered numerous relapses throughout the years, narrowly avoiding a relapse in 2000 when he was prescribed an opiate drug by his doctors. It's understood that his current medical condition is not drug-related, as Kiedis has been clean for a number of years.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are due to release their eleventh studio album, The Getaway, in June of this year with tour dates for Europe expected pretty soon.

Here's hoping Kiedis is well-recovered before then.
