We've been following this story for some time - but now we can officially confirm that there's a new series of The X-Files on its way.

Today, Fox Television officially gave the green-light to begin production on a six-part miniseries that will see Special Agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder return to our TV screens after thirteen years.

Speaking at the launch, creator Chris Carter called the absence from TV as a "a 13-year commercial break."

"The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories."

Gillian Anderson, who's currently starring in the third season of Hannibal, has long been eager to return to the X-Files, as has David Duchovny.

Speaking at the announcement, the duo said that "the X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture - yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning."

"Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as ‘The X-Files’ and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for."

IT'S HAPPENING, PEOPLE. THIS IS NOT A DRILL. IT'S REALLY HAPPENING.
