In a move similar to what Roseanne writers are planning to do with their upcoming reboot, Will & Grace is also going to ignore what happened in their last ever episode. This will no doubt be a relief to fans as the series finale back in 2006 really wasn't the goodbye anybody wanted.
It saw Will (Eric McCormack) and Grace (Debra Messing) drift apart as friends as Will went on with his life with his partner and son Ben while Grace went her own way with her husband Leo (Harry Connick Jr.) and their daughter Lila. There was a time jump which showed them reunite as besties decades later, but still, it was kind of heartbreaking to think that after all they had been through together their friendship didn't survive.
Thankfully we can scrap that last memory of them though as the revival series, which will see all the cast reprising their roles, will forget all that nonsense ever happened.
Entertainment Weekly reports that the show will be picking things up with a single Will and Grace, still living together and childless in their same Manhattan apartment. Will is still a high-powered corporate lawyer, while Grace's interior design business is booming. Jack will return to being their neighbour while teaching an acting class called 'Jacting' and Karen will still be her same boozy self.
"When the decision was made to bring the series back, we were like, well, we left them with kids, right?" co-creator David Kohan told EW. "And if they have children, then it has to be about them being parents, 'cause presumably it would be a priority in their lives.
"And if it wasn't a priority in their lives, then they're still parents, they're just bad parents, right? We frankly did not want to see them being either good parents or bad parents. We wanted them to be Will and Grace."
"They've done well with their lives," co-creator Max Mutchnick teased. "They've always been successful at life and living. It's relationships that Will and Grace have always had the trouble with, and they still do."
In summary, they will still be the same dysfunctional grown ups we all knew and loved, and thank God for that.
Will & Grace returns on Thursday, September 28 at 9pm on NBC in the US. Watch a teaser below:
