Supergirl was always a bit of a risk for leading American network CBS, as it was expensive to produce and very much outside of their core wheelhouse - sitcoms and procedural hour longs.
So, despite doing solidly in the ratings they cancelled the show and it was picked up by the far better suited CW - which already houses The Flash and Arrow.
In Season 2 of the show, Superman will finally make an appearance and the casting looks pretty spot on.

Tyler Hoechlin was one of the stand-outs of the excellent Everybody Wants Some! Which came and went from cinemas far too soon. He was also the kid in The Road to Perdition and our Max had a chat with him.
Great casting. An actor very much on the up.
This obviously won't effect the big screen Man of Steel played by Henry Cavill. Different universes, people.
