Depending on who you ask, Zack Snyder's adaptation of seminal comic-book Watchmen was either a complete and utter disaster or something of an unfairly maligned masterpiece.
It's polarising, in other words - just like Damon Lindelof's work. THR reports that Lindelof, whose previous work includes Prometheus, World War Z, Lost and most recently The Leftovers, is currently in talks with HBO for an adaptation of Alan Moore's Watchmen. Zack Snyder, who directed the film adaptation in 2009, was initially involved with turning the comic-book into a HBO series but has now since departed the project.
Lindelof has previously made no secret of his love for Watchmen and regularly cites it as one of his inspirations for his work. Not only that, HBO's The Leftovers is receiving all sorts of critical praise and it might just be that working in a freer environment like HBO is more conducive to better work from Lindelof than, say, blockbusters like Star Trek Into Darkness or Prometheus.
The series is said to be in early development with no official deal in place and production a long way off, but it's interesting nonetheless to see studios attempting another crack at Watchmen. Whatever you might think of Snyder's adaptation of Watchmen, the story itself is a fascinating one that deserves another attempt with a stronger script.
Here's hoping this comes together.
