"What a woman"

RTÉ aired Katie Taylor's critically acclaimed documentary 'Katie' last night and viewers were very impressed altogether.

Directed by Ross Whitaker, 'Katie' tells the story of Taylor's trailblazing journey from amateur boxing to her first professional bouts, as well as the behind-the-scenes drama that followed which almost derailed her career.

Katie Taylor has won six amateur European championships, five world amateur championships and is an Olympic Gold Medal winner from the London 2012 Olympic Games. She turned professional after a disastrous campaign at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, which saw her crash out in the first round despite being favourite to win.

The synopsis of the documentary reads: "With many writing her off, Taylor decided to start again, and the notoriously private champion agreed to let a small crew document her attempt to rescale the heights."

The film unravels the deeply personal reasons behind the career low and shows the champion's grit and determination to start over as a professional. Katie won her first world title within a year and became the first woman in history to headline her own Sky Sports show.

Entertainment.ie's Movie Editor said in his review of 'Katie': "It's a difficult thing to try and grasp a person's personality when they wall so much of it, yet through gentle persuasion and a sympathetic eye, director Ross Whitaker slowly coaxes Taylor out of her shell, to where it becomes a searingly honest portrayal."
