ABC has given a straight to series order for a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff which will also be set in Seattle.
The focus of the series won’t be on doctors though, but on a group of “heroic” firefighters. Like Grey’s, the series will look at their professional and personal lives.
It’s expected to be launched as a planted spin-off that will air as part of an episode of the veteran medical drama.
Previously, Grey’s Anatomy inspired the spinoff Private Practice, which revolved around Kate Walsh’s character, Dr. Addison Forbes. Since the series wrapped in 2013, the character of Dr. Amelia Shepherd, played by Caterina Scorsone, has migrated to Grey’s Anatomy as a main cast member.
There’s no word yet on character crossovers between the two series.
Shondaland veteran Stacy McKee will serve as showrunner on the drama from Shonda Rhimes (who now has at least five shows on ABC's schedule: Grey's, Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder, For the People and now the spinoff) and Betsy Beers.
