While the current run of The X-Files has split audiences fairly down the middle, one thing's for certain - just about everyone is watching it.

The return of Dana Scully and Fox Mulder to our TV screens has saw all sorts of ratings records smashed worldwide and, for their part, Fox Studios are keen to keep the files open for more. According to Fox head honchos, the biggest impediment to more X-Files is David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and Chris Carter.

"The biggest impediment to going forward with The X-Files is the schedule of David and Gillian and, to an extent, Chris (Carter)," said Dana Walden, one of Fox's executives. Another Fox exec, David Madden, said that they "haven’t talked to the talent yet about Season 2 in any more definitive way than we had prior to airing the show, but certainly, it seems like there’s an audience responding to the show that would love to see more episodes.”

While there's been nothing official or definitive, it's easy to assume that Fox are more than happy to greenlight another six-part series if Duchovny and Anderson can find the time and the writing staff can keep it going.

For their part, both Duchovny and Anderson seemed more than agreeable to continue on doing, provided it fits their schedule. Duchovny mentioned that the idea of six-episode miniseries was what made him sign up for another series. "That’s like continuing the show in a way that we all can do at this point in our lives so that’s how it all came about," explained Duchovny in a recent interview.

What's made the return of the series so interesting has, in actual fact, been just how moved on everyone is from it. The writing on the show has really tended more towards the humourous, poking fun at itself on numerous occasions and acknowledging some of its mistakes from the previous seasons. As the season winds up this Monday, it's going to be interesting to see exactly how it's left.

Undoubtedly, there'll be a clear line left open for them to return. The question is - should they? And do people want to see them back? Let us know in the comments!
