Inspired by a science-fiction novel

'The Sparrow' is in the capable hands of two exciting creators.

Scott Frank, the creator of Netflix's 'The Queen's Gambit', will be joining forces with 'Chernobyl' director and Emmy winner Johan Renck for a new sci-fi series on FX called 'The Sparrow'.

Frank will be basing the TV series on Mary Doria Russell novel of the same name, which was published in 1996. A science-fiction creation, the story is set in the distant future of 2019, and follows a group of priests who travel deep into the solar system.

Through encounters with new life forms that they meet on their expedition to Rakhat, the humans manage to cause a war between the two rival species on the planet, killing many inhabitants (and themselves) in the process. Fast forward to the year 2060, and only one of these Jesuit priests, Emilio Sandoz, manages to make it back to Earth alive.

It seems like a huge budget will be needed for this, with various life forms coming into play, but it has us excited none the less. Wildly different from his most recent offering 'The Queen's Gambit', creator Scott Frank will team up with Johan Renck to executive produce the series together. Frank will also write the script.

FX has a number of other exciting TV series in active development at the moment. Alongside 'The Sparrow', 'Fargo' and 'Legion' creator Noah Hawley is developing an 'Alien' series; Danny Boyle is also said to be working on a Sex Pistols limited series.

'Y: The Last Man', which originally had Barry Keoghan attached but was later replaced by Ben Schnetzer, is due to release at some point later this year on FX and Hulu.
