The 'Star Wars' TV series is shaping up nicely
Taika Waititi is going to voice one of the characters of the upcoming Star Wars-based live-action series 'The Mandalorian.'
Taika Waititi is also directing at least one episode of the series, which is written and produced by Jon Favreau.
Waititi would be known as the director of such films as 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' and 'What We Do in the Shadows.' More recently, he has become most famous for being the helmer of 'Thor Ragnarok.'
Waititi voiced Korg in 'Ragnarok' as well as directing the film. Here's hoping his character in 'The Mandalorian' - Bounty Hunting droid IG-88 - is just as funny.
IG-88 was first introduced in a brief scene in 'The Empire Strikes Back'. He is one of the hunters dispatched to find the Millennium Falcon by Darth Vader.
'The Mandalorian' will be led by 'Narcos' star Pedro Pascal.
Nick Nolte plays an angry, gravelly bounty hunter with connections to Boba Fett. Other cast members include 'Deadpool' star Gina Carano, Carl Weathers of 'Rocky' fame, Giancarlo Esposito and Werner Herzog. Omid Abtahi ('American Gods') and Emily Swallow ('Supernatural') round out the cast.
Favreau is executive producing along with Kathleen Kennedy, Colin Wilson and Dave Filoni. Aside from Taika Waititi, Filoni also directs episodes, as do Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa and Deborah Chow.
The series plays a key part in Disney's strategy for their upcoming streaming service, Disney+, which launches in late 2019.
More details about the series are likely to be revealed during the show's panel at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago next month.
