We've been growing rather tired of the whole premise for the last few seasons of How I Met Your Mother, so you could say we were relieved to hear that they had finally introduced the poor soul who ends up having a few kids with Ted Mosby. Yes, the show's 8th Season came to a close Stateside last night, and the audience (but not Ted) finally met the titular mother. Don't keep reading if you don't want to know who she is.
Still with us? Great.
So, it turns out the mammy of Ted's kiddies is an entirely new character: It's not Robin, it's not Lily, and no, much to the dismay of half the fandom on the Twitter machine, it's not Barney either. Ted's lady love is the as-yet unnamed character played yellow umbrella wielding Cristin Milioti, who made her HIMYM debut in the May 13th finale. You may or may not have heard of this little lassie before, but all you really need to know is that she's actually a former star of 'Once' on Broadway. Sure there's always an Irish connection.
"A lot of viewers have given up on meeting the mother prior to the final episode [of the series]. There are a lot of people who think that's true. I think this will count as a genuine surprise for a lot of people" co-creator Craig Thomas told Entertainment Weekly. "She's a fantastic actress. It seems so much more interesting and so much more Ted to find someone special and unique and new - someone that we haven't seen before" he said.
We don't know about you, but we find the whole thing a little anti-climactic... Especially considering we were left with only half the mystery solved. Find out HOW Ted meets the mother in Season 9, which returns to US TV screens later this year.
